Port Arthur elementary schools step up campus security

Posted: Updated:

The Port Arthur Independent School district is stepping up security after two elementary school students left campus while school was in session.

12 News HD reporter Molly O'Brien spoke with the principal at Dick Dowling Elementary to see what they are doing to prevent this from happening again.

While both children returned to campus safe and sound the school takes safety seriously. Now they are just a week away from installing a new security system that will alert teachers and staff if a door leading outside is opened.

The school is installing a buzzer system on doors that will work much like emergency exits. If a door is opened it will trigger flashing lights and a buzzer. With teachers near working near by, the lights and alarm will notify them immediately that a child has left. There will also be a signal sent to the office notifying staff which door on campus was open.

"I'm not happy about the situation but we are so glad we have a precautionary measure so our kids are safe at all times," said Fredia Washington-Simmons, ths school principal.

Whenever students leave the classroom they will be required to carry a hall pass and they must be escorted by a teacher.

(KCEN) – While the homeless veteran count is dropping nationwide, Killeen and Temple are seeing a spike in the number of homeless veterans – and it's not just individual veterans. “We're seeing more homeless families, and we've seen an increase in that over the last few months because of the downsizing of the military,” Paula Wood said. “It's very sad to look a family in the eye and say do you have a friend or family member you can stay with because it's going to take a month to get you re-ho...More >>

(NBC) -- A federal judge Friday threw out new Texas abortion restrictions that would have effectively closed more than a dozen clinics in the state. U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel sided with clinics that sued over one of the most disputed measures of a sweeping anti-abortion bill signed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry in 2013. The ruling stops new restrictions that would have left just seven abortion facilities open in Texas by Sept. 1; there are currently 19 providers in Texas, according to th...More >>
