Operation Homefront distributed more than 300 holiday meals to pre-registered military families on Saturday morning at the nonprofit's annual Holiday Meals for Military event in Killeen.

The donation-backed organization, which was founded in 2002, operates nationwide and cares for tens of thousands of military families each year through financial help, housing assistance and family support.

Saturday's distributions included non-perishable items, along with gift cards that could be redeemed for the rest of the groceries necessary to prepare complete holiday meals later this month. The food and gift cards were distributed from 10 a.m. to noon at the Shilo Inn Suites on WS Young Drive in Killeen.

The Holiday meals for Military part of Operation Homefront's work began around Thanksgiving 2009 when a beverage company employee saw a Fort Drum soldier, along with the soldier's wife and infant, were unable to afford groceries at a supermarket in Upstate New York. That chance encounter sparked a movement that began with providing 500 meal kits to military families in 2009 and has grown to distributing more than 8,000 meals nationally this year.
