The National Council for Home Safety and Security released a list of the top 50 safest cities to live in Texas.
Four Central Texas cities made the cut.
Woodway, Hewitt, and Robinson all made the top 40. Gatesville is the fourth Central Texas city on the list, ranked 42nd.
The council reviewed the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics compared with population data to compile the list. All cities who failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI and/or have a population of 5,000 or less were not eligible.
To calculate the list, the remaining cities were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes (assault, murder, rape, robbery, etc.) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, etc.) per 100,00 people. The statistics were then weighted. Violent crimes accounted for 70 percent of the total and property crimes rounded out the final 30 percent. Finally, the council adjusted the statistics to show each city's rate per 1,000 people.
Here are the averages for every city in Texas:
Average population: 56,887
Violent crime rate per 1,000 people: 3
Property crime rate per 1,000 people: 27
