Burglary suspect eats food, steals clothes from home, wears them, police say

Someone woke up to find the suspect on a couch inside a home, police say.

A man was taken to the McLennan County jail for allegedly burglarizing a home and evading officers Thursday in West.

Police arrested Ernesto Leon, 31, for Burglary of a Habitation and Felony Evading.

The West Police Department said a homeowner's father woke up to find Leon on a couch in the 600 block of West Elm Street, where officers said Leon had entered the home through an unlocked door. The father left the house and called his son -- the homeowner -- to confirm nobody should be inside. He then called 911.

Police said Leon ate food from the home and had stolen the clothes he was wearing.

West Police and the McLennan County Sheriff's Office responded to the home, where a deputy saw Leon run from the back of the house toward Bush's Chicken, according to law enforcement. A deputy managed to get Leon at gunpoint while he was trying to hide under the "Ice Ice Baby" shaved ice trailer, authorities said. But, Leon ran from the trailer and was then caught by deputies and officers in a grass median across from Czech Stop, police said.

No one was hurt during the chase or arrest.

Police believe Leon was also involved in a disturbance Wednesday outside of West, but they said he left before deputies arrived at that other scene. Police said he was traveling to the Brownsville area with a woman from Nebraska but ended up stranded in the West area after that other vague incident.
