DPS: Man shot by KPD officer had stolen an ambulance

The suspect in an officer-involved shooting is accused of stealing an ambulance.

The Texas Department of Public Safety announced Wednesday that the suspect who was shot by a Killeen Police officer was accused of stealing an ambulance.

The suspect was shot last Friday evening in the 2600 block of Cross Timber Drive in Killeen, where that same ambulance had been involved in a crash. When the KPD officer reached the scene, police said the suspect charged at the officer -- causing the officer to shoot him.

The suspect was airlifted to Baylor Scott & White in Temple but later released and taken to the Bell County Jail.

He was charged with theft of the ambulance. It was not immediately clear if any additional charges might be filed.

Per regular department policy, the officer was placed on administrative leave while an investigation was conducted. The Texas Rangers will lead the investigation, per protocol. There was no timeline for when the investigation might be completed.

The suspect's name had not been released, as of Wednesday night.
