A former local police officer pointed a gun at a Bell County Sheriff's Deputy and assaulted him during a struggle.
Krzysztof Kala, 43, pointed a 40-caliber firearm at Deputy Jevon Smith, who tried to check on him at his home on Pecan Creek Road in Killeen around 10 p.m. Tuesday and suffered a leg injury during the struggle that ensued.
Deputy Smith was originally dispatched for a welfare check on Kala, after the Veterans Crisis Line notified the Sheriff's Department that Kala was threatening himself.
Kala was charged with aggravated assault against a public servant, and his bond was set at $100,000. He is a former Killeen Police Officer and Nolanville Police Officer, who also served in the military.
Deputy Smith was treated at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Temple and released.
