UPDATE: A crime duo accused of conning their way into Waco homes and stealing people's belongings -- in one case $10,000 worth of jewelry -- has been caught, according to Waco Police.

Rio Calvin Mitchell, 27, of Waco, and Julie Tootsie Costa, 26, were arrested Sunday evening after some "alert citizens" called in their "suspicious behavior," said Waco Police Sgt. Patrick Swanton, who explained that multiple people have called police about similar incidents in which they now believe the duo was involved.

Original Story

The Waco Police Department is trying to track down a crime duo conning their way into local homes, then stealing people's belongings -- in one case $10,000 worth of jewelry.

Waco Police Sgt. Patrick Swanton said the thefts involve a man and woman. The man was described as being Hispanic -- possibly in his late 20s or early 30s with an "average height" and weighing roughly 140 pounds. His female companion was described as being in her 30s and possibly either Hispanic, Latin, Arabic or Indian -- with an "average height and slender build."

According to detectives, the pair will pretend to be interested in buying something the victim is selling. For example, investigators believe they scout homes that have things like vehicle sale signs posted outdoors; or they might track down people selling items on Craigslist. They then show up to the victims' homes under the pretense of buying something and promise to return the next day with money. But, before they leave, the woman will ask to use the bathroom.

"She uses the excuse she is pregnant, to gain entry inside," Sgt. Swanton wrote in an email. "If she is refused, she will become very insistent."

From there, the man distracts the owner while the woman steals things. The pair has been seen driving multiple vehicles that Swanton said were most likely rented.

"The safety of our citizens is paramount," Sgt. Swanton said. "We encourage citizens selling items, please use our Waco Police Department front parking lot as an exchange point when possible."

Anyone who has encountered the pair or experienced a similar incident was urged to call the Waco Police Department at 254-750-3608 and speak with Detective Anne Cyr.
