Killeen Police arrested a man who accidentally shot himself in the leg, then allegedly made up a story about a shooting and aggravated robbery.
Investigators said at 8:08 p.m. on June 6 they responded to a report of a shooting and aggravated robbery, meeting a person who falsely claimed he was shot during a robbery at the Walmart at 1400 Lowes Blvd in Killeen. Two alleged witnesses also claimed the robbery and shooting happened, police said.
Officers ultimately determined the report was false and the 'victim' had accidentally shot himself at his apartment in the 700 block of N 46th Street in Killeen.
"With the assistance of the Ft Hood Criminal Investigation Division, the victim’s friends eventually admitted the report was false and no robbery had taken place," Killeen Police Commander Alex Gearhart said. "They also admitted that the firearm that was used was thrown out into a field. With their cooperation, the firearm was located and recovered."
Police said false 'witnesses' Mauricio Lugo, 23, and Andre Williams, 21, were both arrested for making a false report to a peace officer. Both were released from jail on $5,000 bonds.
The man who shot himself, Antoine McDaniels, fled after he was released from the hospital. Investigators said he was wanted for making a false report to a peace officer, failing to show identification and illegally discharging a firearm.
"Additional charges are being reviewed by the Bell County District Attorney’s Office relating to this case for tampering with evidence," Gearhart said.
McDaniels turned himself in at Killeen Police headquarters on June 12. He was released on $15,000 bond, according to Gearhart.
