Driver in hit-and-run of teen Georgetown cyclist abruptly released from prison

The family of Tommy Ketterhagen is stunned after the man convicted in the hit-and-run death of their son has been abruptly released.

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Weeks after a 20-year-old was sentenced to two years prison in the hit-and-run death of a teen cyclist in Georgetown, the driver has been abruptly released, KVUE's and the Austin American-Statesman's Tony Plohetski has learned.

The driver, Aaron Davison, struck Thomas "Tommy" Ketterhagen, 19, on Jan. 23, 2017. Davison turned himself in days after the crash and pleaded guilty in January 2018.

In early March 2018, Judge Rick J. Kennon of the 368th District Court sentenced Davison to two years in prison and 10 years probation. His probation included strict conditions, including a counseling class, a written letter of apology to the victim's family and no traffic tickets during those 10 years.

Williamson County Jail records show Davison was released on March 22. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice said Davison served 404 days of the sentence before he was released for time served and good behavior.

"It's not at all what we were told would happen, it's not at all what we were prepared for," said Tommy's father, Tom Ketterhagen. "We do know the system failed us."

Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick said he is "outraged" by Davison's release and is trying to learn more.

"I have never heard of it happening in a case like this with a manslaughter charge and the victim's family should be contacted," Dick said. "I never would have made the plea agreement if I thought he wasn't going to spend at least some time in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice."

Tom Ketterhagen said his family misses Tommy every day and that they make frequent visits to the cemetery and the site where he was killed.

"It's been a road to recovery for us and I think it will continue for a long, long time," said Tom.
