The Copperas Cove Police Department is working to build a tighter community with their yearly Citizens Police Academy. Saturday, academy training included firing and MP5 - a fully automatic submachine gun.

The automatic weapon was just one part of the range practice trainees completed. They also fired hand guns and learned how to properly load weapons.

Trainees are in the 8th week of the Copperas Cove Police Citizens Academy. Lessons have already covered traffic stops, narcotics, crime scene investigations, and DWI procedures.

The goal of the academy is to provide a venue between the police and the citizens they serve, but it also provides great experience for people looking to join the force in the future. The Copperas Cove Police Department already has several people on staff that got started in the citizens academy, and several more are looking to enter the police academy after starting the citizen program.
