Decorated rocks intended to help combat child abuse in Bell County

National Child Abuse Hotline: 1-800-422-4453.

April is Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month, and Central Texans have decorated more than 1,700 rocks with the Child Abuse Hotline number on them.

Those rocks were distributed all over Belton, Temple and Morgan's Point Resort.

The rocks were put at schools, parks, and at bus stops. Those who distributed them even put rocks in a line from the Children's Advocacy Center in Belton to the Bell County Courthouse.

NATIONAL CHILD ABUSE HOTLINE: 1-800-422-4453.

The nonprofit Aware Central Texas offers its own 24-hour hotline number: 254-813-0968.

Also happening this month, the Communities In Schools chapter at East Ward Elementary School in Killeen will team up with the Bell County Child Welfare Board to host a child abuse prevention and awareness event from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on April 6 inside the school's P.E. building. The event is open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to wear blue, which represents child abuse prevention initiatives.

Bell County Child Welfare Board President Linda Kieff and Vice President David Woodberry will speak, and fingerprinting kits will be available for children.

“A lot of child abuse cases arise from situations and conditions that can be preventable when community programs and systems work together," Woodberry said in a press release. "An engaged, supportive community is more likely to foster nurturing families and healthy children.”
