The Elks Lodge in Temple held an Easter egg hunt for kids with special needs Saturday.

Temple — It was just like a normal Easter egg hunt.

Kids take off running to gather as much candy as they can and then eat it.

All of it.

"We had an Easter egg hunt like everyone else," Bob Patterson, Exhaulted Leader with Elks Lodge No. 138 in Temple, said. "Then we thought, 'Well, no one services the special needs children and sometimes they find it very difficult to compete in an open event.'"

Saturday, the lodge held its sixth Easter egg hunt for kids with special needs.

It estimates about 400 kids showed up and Patterson said the event has grown each year, leaving smiles on the kids' faces as big as their baskets.

"It's one of those that you don't realize what a blessing it really is until you get involved," Wesley Teeters said.

Teeters' daughter, Hope, has Down Syndrome. He said when they walked in Saturday, her face lit up as she looked around her.

Still, he reminds her and his family what he feels is the true meaning of the Easter holiday.

"It's not what you get," Teeters said. "It's what you give."

That's something the Elk's Lodge said it won't lose sight of in Easters to come.

"We'll continue to do this for years to come because it's such a rewarding event," Patterson said.
