Ellison High School student holds tech symposium

Wednesday, Ellison High School students learned their standard science, math, and history but thanks to a senior at Ellison's leadership academy, there was more.

"We can use technology for information," Ellison senior Symone Thomas said. "My generation, one thing we don't do is everything is given to us, we don't get for ourselves and we need to know how. Like the councilmen said, we even need information for school."

Thomas presented her senior leadership project to classmates about how they can use technology to help in life. It caught the interest of Bell County Justice of the Peace Claudia Brown and Killeen City Council members Gregory Johnson and Steve Harris.

"That's what young people should do instead of complaining," Harris said. "Help find solutions that'll help."

Johnson said he thinks it's great young people in the city aren't just willing to talk but roll their sleeves up and get to work.

Thomas covered skills like balancing a checkbook, filing taxes and posting and perception on social media. She sent surveys on how these apply to different topics like citizenship, gender equality and economics of life to each of the Killeen ISD high schools, using the answers to guide Wednesday's presentation.

That's the one thing we can do with technology, is look up information so we can educate ourselves on matters that will one day affect us," Thomas said.

It's a project Judge Brown said she was glad to be a part of.

"It's amazing to bring these types of skills and this type of information to all of the seniors," Brown said.
