The family of the victims in Tuesday's double fatal crash in Temple was remembering them Thursday.

Jeff Smith, 56, and Shirley Smith, 61, had been married since June 1993. An earlier police report incorrectly stated Jeff's age as 59.

Jeff grew up in Central Illinois and moved to Texas to follow his dream of becoming a medical technologist. He met Shirley while they were both working at a hospital in Huntsville.

Most recently, they worked at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

On Facebook, their friends expressed shock and mourned the the couple's death.

"As evidenced by Shirley's Facebook page, they were loved by many, many friends and co-workers," Jeff's sister Melissa told Channel Six. "They both could make anyone laugh at any time. They were truly loved by all who knew them."

Jeff and Shirley had no children.

Police said the couple did not yield the right of way at a stop sign, and their sedan was struck by a large truck hauling scrap metal near the intersection of State Highway 95/Loop 363 and Highway 190. The truck driver suffered minor injuries and was not taken to the hospital.
