Grand Jury clears Temple officers in standoff shooting

After review and deliberation, the Bell County Grand jury determined no indictment should be returned to the officers for their use of force taken in connection with the suspect's arrest.

The Bell County Grand jury determined Wednesday no indictment should be returned to the officers for their use of force taken in connection with the arrest of a suspect involved in a seven-hour standoff.

On September 21, 2017, officers responded to Feed My Sheep Homeless Shelter at 112 W. Ave G to a report of a man with a knife.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the suspect who is identified as 40-year-old Randle Jackson. He ran away and gunshots were exchanged, according to the Temple Police Department. During the gunfire, a female bystander was shot in the leg.

Jackson ended up barricading himself in a house in the 800 block of S 7th Street where the nearly seven-hour standoff ensued.

After efforts of getting Jackson to surrender, SWAT officers deployed chemicals into the house in order to prompt a surrender.

Jackson was eventually arrested and taken into custody.

A separate investigation was launched by the Texas Rangers to determine whether the gunfire was from officers or the suspect shot the woman. The investigation was presented to the grand jury and they determined on indictment should be returned against the officers.

Jackson is charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant.

His trial is set for June 2018.
