Almost 300 basketball players filled Baylor's on-campus gyms this weekend hoping to qualify for the state championships.

The Heart of Texas Special Olympics held its annual area basketball tournament at Baylor University Feb. 23-24, 2018.

The two-day event started with a skills challenge and 3-on-3 tournament Friday and ended with a 5-on-5 tournament Saturday. Even with athletes hoping to qualify for the upcoming State Summer Games in Arlington, area director Tommy Smith said he hopes the players walk out with a smile as big as Texas.

"I hope they have a lot of fun, but also a sense of accomplishment," Smith said. "A sense of looking at the medal or ribbon that they won and knowing that they earned it, because they did."
