Killeen Independent School District Police were investigating threats made on social media against local schools Tuesday.

Shannon Rideout, with Killeen ISD, said the threats were related to the recent string of clown threats made across Texas and the country.

The district released the following statement:

"The District is aware of recent social media threats. The KISD police department and local law enforcement are closely monitoring this matter. We will take appropriate actions and the district will respond to credible threats accordingly. The safety and security of our students and staff will remain our top priority."

Rideout did not say if any of the threats were made against specific schools.

Killeen Police also released a statement on their Facebook page.

"This morning, the Killeen Police Department began receiving messages from concerned citizens regarding a social media post. A user in a clown costume posted specific threats on social media regarding Halloween in Killeen. Although the Killeen Police Department has no reason to believe at this time that the threats are credible, they are nonetheless disturbing and are being taken seriously."
