III Corps bids farewell to British General Chalmers

"They come from every background. I think spending time with them has probably been my greatest memory," said Major General Douglas Chalmers, the British General who will be heading back to northern London.

FORT HOOD — The III Corps on Fort Hood is bidding farewell to its British General Major General Douglas Chalmers. He arrived at Fort Hood in 2015, but didn't spend much time here at first.

Major General Douglas Chalmers was deployed overseas to Iraq and Syria in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

Chalmers said his fondest memory is talking with American soldiers and learning about why they serve.

"They come from every background. I think spending time with them has probably been my greatest memory. They're bright, they're articulate, they're engaging and General Funk started it, but I kept on doing it, is asking why they serve and they're great, great, great, great people," Chalmers said.

Chalmers said the US and UK militaries are quite different and he takes back with him and understanding and empathy of the U.S. military structure to the United Kingdom. He said he hopes to use that knowledge to improve the continuing relationship between the U.S. and UK soldiers.

The exchange program continues at III Corps as Major General Felix Gedney will take over. Gedney is currently forward deployed in the Middle East. Chalmers will be the Standing Joint Task Force Commander back in the UK, comprised of the Army, Navy and Air Force.
