Package with unknown substance at Hewitt FedEx facility deemed safe

The McLennan County Bomb Squad x-rayed the package and determined it was safe.

The Hewitt Police Hazardous Materials team determined Thursday morning that an oily substance found on the outside of a package at the FedEx distribution center on Alliance Pkwy. was not hazardous, according to Hewitt Police Chief James Devlin.

The McLennan County bomb squad was also at the scene as a precaution. They x-rayed the package and determined it was safe, said Devlin.

An employee who handled the package, around 7 a.m., started to not feel well and went to the hospital. Other employees also started coughing, said Devlin.

The McLennan County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad was called to the scene in an abundance of caution but Chief Devlin stressed they didn't believe the package contained anything explosive.

The employees moved the package outside and work continued as usual inside the building. The scene was cleared by 9 a.m.
