Pershing Park Elementary School in Killeen was put on lockdown around 11 a.m. Friday, following a shooting nearby.
The lockdown was initiated while Killeen Police investigated a shooting nearby. Early Friday afternoon, Killeen ISD released a statement confirming the lockdown was lifted at 12:32 p.m. after getting an all-clear notice from police.
"Students and staff are safe in their classrooms," the statement said. "The safety of students and staff remains a top priority of the district."
The school emphasized the lockdown was only a precaution.
Killeen Police Spokesperson Ofelia Miramontez said officers did not tell the school to go into a lockdown. But, she said the lockdown was a precautionary response to police activity -- as officers continue to investigate the shooting behind the 7-Eleven at 1219 S. Fort Hood Street that happened around 9:23 a.m. and resulted in one man hospitalized in critical condition from a gunshot wound. No arrests had been made, as of early Friday afternoon. The 7-Eleven is located just blocks away from the school.
This is a developing story. We will post updates as they become available.
