The Red Cross is helping a Temple family of six after their home caught fire at 709 N. 6th Street just before noon Friday.

Firefighters said heavy smoke and flames came out of the south and rear portions of the home.

Nobody was home at the time, and there were no injuries.

The fire was declared under control at 12:24 p.m., according to Temple Fire & Rescue. Eleven Temple fire units and 27 firefighters responded, Temple Fire Chief Mitch Randles said.

Randles said the house was so badly damaged that it was not habitable. However, it was still not a total loss, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. And, fire crews were still on scene well into the afternoon.
