A man is in the Bell County Jail after leading police on a chase early Saturday morning in Temple.

Around 8:19 a.m., a DPS trooper tried to make a traffic stop of a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro that had been reported as stolen by the Johnson County sheriff’s Office.

Police identified the suspect as 23-year-old Garrett Bullard of Alvarado.

Officials said the trooper attempted to stop Bullard on I-35 southbound in Temple. However, the suspect did not stop and attempted to evade him and struck the trooper’s patrol unit with the Camaro.

The suspect drove down several local streets until crashing around 8:34 a.m. in the River Bend Park area off of FM 2484 at approximately 8:34 a.m. Bullard fled on foot but was later found hiding in an abandoned vehicle that was parked in the area.

He was taken into custody without further incident.

No injuries were reported.

Bullard is in jail for Felony Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Felony Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer, and Felony Evading Arrest of Detention in a Motor Vehicle.
