An aggravated robbery suspect is in custody after being involved in an officer-involved shooting after 9:00 p.m. Monday at North Valley Mills and Waco Drive near the Vegas Chinese Buffet.

Waco police responded to a robbery call at the Corner Store located at 2524 Colonial. Officers learned that 37-year-old Christopher Antwon Blackwell entered the store with a shotgun, demanded money from the female clerk and then fled the store in a Chevy SUV.

Officers were involved in a chase with the suspect until he wrecked his vehicle into a light pole in front of the restaurant.

A standoff began after the suspect refused to exit the SUV. He picked up the shotgun and pointed it at officers causing them to defend themselves.

Several officers fired shots at the suspect due to his hostile actions.

Blackwell continued to ignore officer’s pleas to exit the vehicle and told officers they were going to die and that he had a handgun.

SWAT Officers on the scene used a less lethal round to break the back glass for improved visibility. A distraction device along with pepper-spray was eventually used to force the suspect from the SUV.

The suspect was uncooperative when he exited the vehicle and after a brief struggle, officers were able to arrest him.

Blackwell was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest where he was treated for gunshot wounds to his lower left leg and left buttock.

He was medically cleared and taken to jail where he is charged with Aggravated Robbery, Evading in a Vehicle and Possession of a Firearm by a felon.

Waco police and the Texas Rangers are conducting a joint investigation of the shooting.
