Teacher pay raises up for discussion at Killeen ISD school board meeting

Officials are working to develop a budget for the new fiscal year that begins September 1 and will discuss with the school board the potential for pay raises for teachers and all other employees.

The Killeen ISD school board will discuss teacher salaries at Tuesday night’s school board meeting.

According to the district, nearly 3,000 teachers could see pay raised for the next school year as the school board begins discussion of the teacher salary schedule as a part of the budgeting process at the meeting.

Officials are working to develop a budget for the new fiscal year that begins September 1 and will discuss with the school board the potential for pay raises for teachers and all other employees ranging from one to two percent. A two percent increase would give every Killeen ISD teacher an approximate $1,000 raise.

Superintendent John Craft said a pay raise for teachers and other employees is a way to reward hard work and keep the district’s salaries competitive.

“Our teachers do phenomenal work and that resonates each and every day impacting our students,” Dr. Craft said. “Our educators certainly deserve a pay raise, and it’s also very important that we keep our salaries competitive so that we can retain our teachers and other educators and recruit new ones every year to keep providing our students a first-rate education.”

The district’s administration is also looking at increasing the starting pay for brand-new teachers as the district works to hire up to 500 new teachers for the next school year. Killeen is the largest school district in the area and employs more teachers than any other local school district.

First-year teacher salaries would also be increased as KISD works to continue to have the highest teacher pay in the region, the district said.

The administration also will discuss with the board the results of the Family Fitness and Wellness fair, a Department of Defense Education Activity grant opportunity to bring mobile STEM labs to elementary campuses, and a school-based health center Memorandum of Understanding to continue providing health-related services to students without having to leave school.

The school board will not vote on a pay raise Tuesday night. The vote would come later in the budget development cycle leading up to start of the fiscal year Sept. 1.

The meeting will be held at Roy J. Smith Middle School, not at the regular meeting location of district headquarters.
