Texas has a surprising connection to the game of ice hockey

To many people's surprise, for a state that’s considered dry and hot, Texas has a rich history in ice hockey.

At one point back in the early 2000’s, if you believe it or not, the state of Texas had more pro hockey teams than any other state in the U.S.A.

Back in 2003 the state had 14 teams playing in the Central Hockey League, the East Coast Hockey League, the Western Professional Hockey League, and the American Hockey League.

Now 10 teams currently compete professionally in the state and although four teams have dropped out it still shows that the arid state of Texas is still invested in the icy sport.

For Central Texans, the opportunity to learn all about ice hockey and to get out on the rink can happen at Chaparral Ice in Austin.
