CENTRAL TEXAS — A man comes to your door and says he needs to get into your backyard. He claims to be a subcontractor from cable provider Spectrum but doesn't have anything showing that proves it. Should you trust him?

Several Killeen homeowners have complained on Facebook that people claiming to work for Spectrum, a brand name used by telecommunications company Charter Communications, have shown up in personal vehicles or without identification cards. Other posts on Facebook claim legitimate workers should always have marked vehicles, uniforms, ID cards, or paperwork from Spectrum. How much of that is true? Channel 6 set out to verify what you should look for when a contractor shows up at your door.

After reaching out to Spectrum on their Facebook page, Channel 6 was eventually contacted by Charter Communications Spokesman Brian Anderson. Anderson released the following statement:

All contractors working on Spectrum’s behalf should have magnetic signage on their vehicles identifying them as such. All Spectrum employees and contractors also carry Spectrum identification cards. Safety is a top priority for us, so anyone who has a question regarding the identity of a contractor should err on the side of caution and contact Spectrum or local law enforcement to ensure the request for access to their property is legitimate.

Based on that statement, Channel 6 can verify that any person claiming to be a Spectrum contractor should be able to show a Spectrum-issued ID card and should be driving a vehicle with some sort of signage. If either of those things are missing, a homeowner is advised to turn the person away.

If you need to call Spectrum concerning a questionable contractor, Anderson said the company could be reached at 1-800-892-4357.
