Tourism in Waco is booming and the city has seen a surge in people wanting to rent out their homes.
On Monday night, the city is scrambling to redo ordinances they said are outdated and making home rentals more difficult.
A big reason for the tourism as you may have guessed is the success of the show ‘Fixer Upper’ and Magnolia Market at the Silos.
Websites like AirBNB and VRBO are just a few of the more popular short-term rental websites that people have been flocking to in order to spend a few days in town.
Now the city is trying to figure out how home owners can legally provide short-term rentals to guests without all the hassle required by the current ordinance.
Right now, just designating your home as a rental can take over three months and include public hearings and an approval process that goes through city council, something that leaders said just isn’t necessary any more.
Waco Planning Director Clint Peters said right now, they have to go through a tedious process.
“A three-month approval, where it’s really not needed,” Peters said. “If this ordinance goes through, all they will have to do is come in, deal with staff, get their license and it can be approved within a week.”
The proposed ordinance will be taken to city council at the July 18 meeting and if everything goes as planned, it will go into effect on August 1.
