A Waco Police retired canine officer was laid to rest Tuesday, after veterinarians determined his pain had progressed to the point his quality of life was compromised.

K-9 Viper lived out his retirement with his handler Officer Ray Woodruff and his family before being put down peacefully Tuesday afternoon.

"Waco P.D. would like to thank Doctor Surber and her staff at Liveoak Veterinary Park in Woodway for the extraordinary medical care Viper has received," Waco Police Sgt. Patrick Swanton said. "A special thank you to Cross River Pet Cremation in McGregor for graciously donating the cremation service for Viper."

Rest in peace, Viper. Channel 6 thanks you for your service.
