It was a special day for 29 kids, as they were welcomed into new homes during the 30th annual DC Adoption Day ceremony. At the D.C. Superior Court, hundreds joined to watch the kids join different families.
James and Trovell Hobson were all smiles as they were formally adopted.
"When I went up on that stage," said Trovell. "I was holding back from crying."
The event, which lasted approximately two hours, was celebrated with an introduction of each of the children. Robert Hobson, the new father of the Hobson duo, said it was an emotional day.
"I'm just trying to hold back," he said. "Because the tears of joy. I think God has truly blessed us."
Barbara Harrison, an anchor at WRC was the emcee of the event, and the guest speaker was comedian and actress Kym Whitley. Joining Whitley at the event was her adopted son, Joshua.
"I can't imagine my life without him," she said. "Once he came into my life, I was like, 'what was I doing before I became an adopted mom?'"
The children were between 18 months and 19 years old. Destany Crawford, who is 12, was adopted by her grandparents Linda and Hardrick.
Linda, who was also adopted when she was a child, said that the family was now complete.
"I love her," she said. "I don't know what I would do without her."
The event is meant to be both a celebration and a call to action. There are currently more than 1,000 children in the D.C. foster care system.
