Rangers Sign INF Darwin Barney to Minors Contract

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has signed infielder Darwin Barney to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training camp.

Barney, 32, batted .232 with 6 home runs, 14 doubles, and 25 RBI in 129 games for Toronto last year, his second full season with the Blue Jays. He won a Rawlings Gold Glove Award at second base while with the Cubs in 2012, posting a National League-best .997 fielding percentage while playing 141 consecutive errorless games that season. Although he has played primarily second base in his MLB career, Barney has also made over 35 starts at both third base and shortstop, including 55 starts at third base in 2016-17.

Barney has a career .246 batting average across 814 major league games with Chicago-NL (2010-14), Los Angeles-NL (2014-15), and Toronto (2015-17). He played in 7 games for Toronto in the 2016 postseason against Texas and Cleveland. The Oregon native played at Oregon State University, where he was part of the Beavers’ back-to-back College World Series championships in 2006-07 before being selected by the Cubs in the fourth round of the 2007 June draft.

With the signing of Barney, the Rangers have 64 players on the club’s spring training roster: a full 40-man roster along with 24 non-roster invitees.
