TRAFFIC: Contractor will take down part of old railroad bridge in Temple

Drivers in Temple may be required to detour by the old railroad bridge Thursday night into Friday.

The rightmost northbound I-35 main lane between Nugent Avenue and Exit 303A (the Spur 290/Industrial Boulevard exit) will close in Temple Thursday night -- along with the northbound frontage road under the railroad bridge.

While closed, a contractor will demolish a portion of the old railroad bridge over the interstate.

TxDOT said flaggers would be stationed on the northbound frontage road to direct drivers through the construction zone.

Drivers who need to access the Spur 290/Industrial Boulevard area on the southbound side will be able to take a detour that will bring them to Exit 304/N Loop 363. Drivers will be guided to complete a U-turn that will ultimately but them back onto Spur 290/Industrial Boulevard.

"There will still be two main lanes open for traffic that doesn't need to stop," TxDOT Spokesperson Jodi Wheatley wrote in an email.

TxDOT said the southbound-to-northbound turnaround at Industrial Boulevard would remain open to allow drivers access to the area around Baker Boulevard.

The closure was expected to end by 7 a.m. Friday.
