Copperas Cove 10-year-old raises $1000 for 89th Military Police unit on Fort Hood

A 10-year-old beauty pageant winner in Copperas Cove is raising thousands to help dogs serving on Fort Hood. Kaydence Roberts won Junior Mrs. Rabbit Fest several years ago. Afterward, the City of Copperas Cove changed the pageant organization to be called Copperas Cove Five Hills Scholarship Pageant.

Winners must put together community events, so two years ago Roberts decided to do something to help animals. Grandmother Dawn Hale says she's made a huge difference in two years.

"Her platform was helping homeless service animals. So last year and this year she has raised $16,000 for the animal control facility and the military K9 dogs," Hale said.

Roberts now holds the title of Ms. Five Hills Scholarship Pageant Junior Ambassador.

Sunday Roberts held her second annual support drive for the 89th Military Police Brigade on Fort Hood. They gave potential donors a list of all the things the brigade might need, and locals would shop at the local Walmart.

"We have some treats, we have some of the teeth stuff that cleans their teeth, we have some toys," Roberts said. "We have to make sure [toys] are rough and tough because they are big dogs."

Roberts said the drive was also collecting food and shampoo for the dogs. She came up with the idea after hearing about army experiences from her father.

"I love animals," Roberts said. "My grandma and pop were in the army, my dad's in the army, once you learn about it [the dogs] are very important because they save army men and women's lives."

At the end of the day, Roberts had seven grocery carts filled with items and raised $1000.
