Chicago Bears Linebacker and University of Mary Hardin-Baylor alumnus Jerrell Freeman will be at a children’s health event Saturday, March 24 in Belton.

The United Way of Central Texas Second Annual Hometown huddle will take place from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at UMHB Crusader Stadium. In addition to meeting Freeman, the UMHB Division III National Champion football team will be present.

Boys and girls ages 7-12 will participate in 10 non-contact sports drills led by Titan Total Training coaches. Participants will learn about the importance of playing for 60 minutes a day and fighting childhood obesity. The American Heart Association recommends children participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily.

Sports obstacles will include a football tire toss and an inflatable tackling buddy course. Attendees will also receive a goodie bag, snacks, and t-shirt.

T3 CEO Ike Shaw said children are our future.

“In order for them to be better, they must do better and we have to teach them and be examples of what we say do,” Shaw said.

The American Heart Association said increased physical activity has been associated with an increased life expectancy and decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. Physical activity produces overall physical, psychological, and social benefits, according to the AHA.

At the end of the event, participants will be challenged to sign Play 60 minutes a Day pledge certificates.

Freeman said he is proud to support United Way of Central Texas Hometown Huddle.

“The event is designed to bring awareness and increase youth health and fitness,” Freeman said. “The goal of Hometown Huddle is to promote youth fitness and to show kids that working out for 60 minutes a day can be fun.”

Veshell Greene, United Way of Central Texas director of public relations said both Jerrell and Ike are amazing and they are fortunate enough to have them for the program.

“Not only do we get to educate and motivate the kids by supporting exercise, the parents get to see part of who United Way of Central Texas is and what we do,” Greene said.
