Affidavit: 2-year-old drowns in tub while mom has sex in other room

Mother arrested in child drowning

A 26-year-old Wise County woman who was allegedly having sex in another room while her two-year-old daughter drowned in a bathtub has been arrested.

Amanda Ann Clark left her three daughters alone in a bathtub filled with water on Oct. 23 while she had sex with a man in her bedroom, according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by News 8.

Her youngest daughter, Alexandria, who would’ve turned two years old on Friday, drowned.

Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin says he's never encountered anything quite like it after decades in law enforcement.

"This is the first time I've come across something like this," he said.

Clark turned herself in to authorities Tuesday and was being held at the Wise County Jail on $100,000 bond.

The affidavit states that Clark told investigators she was “visiting a male companion” in her bedroom with the door closed while the children were alone in the tub.

The man told investigators, however, that he had come to Clark’s Alvord home for a “booty call.” The girls were playing in the living room before Clark gathered them, put them in the tub and came to the bedroom, the man said, according to the affidavit.

A short time later, Clark’s oldest daughter, who is six years old, went into the bedroom to say that Alexandria had stopped breathing. The six-year-old told investigators that her 3-year-old sister had pushed Alexandria under the water in the tub.

"Of course, the three year old didn't have a clue about the what that was all about, what the implications of that might be," said Akin.

Neighbors and friends of Clark defended her on Wednesday, saying she made a terrible "mistake."

"She was screaming, hollering, 'Help me. Help me.' She loved those kids," said Jodi Malott, who lives across the street.

She says Clark tried CPR, and dialed 911, which the affidavit confirms.

Clark is charged with abandoning or endangering a child, a felony.
