Lampasas man charged with intoxication manslaughter in death of elderly man

LAMPASAS COUNTY, Texas -- A Lampasas man was charged with intoxication manslaughter after DPS troopers said his eastbound pickup truck drifted into the westbound lane of FM 580 and struck an SUV head-on, killing the 70-year-old driver.

Tyler Prothro, 23, who refused medical treatment at the scene, was arrested and taken to the Lampasas County Jail, according to DPS.

The victim was identified as Ronald Bascom, who the Texas Department of Public Safety said was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash around 12:51 p.m. Wednesday -- 10 miles west of Lampasas.

"DPS would like to stress the dangers of impaired driving and the tragedy that can occur as a result," DPS Sgt. David Roberts said in a statement. "Plan ahead to have a designated driver or an alternate means of transportation available if you are going to drink."

The crash is under investigation.
