Officer falls ill, man arrested during welfare check at Temple CEFCO

A Temple police officer is recovering after authorities said he suffered medical issues while trying to conduct a welfare check at a local gas station.

A Temple Police Officer was taken to the hospital by ambulance after suffering medical issues Wednesday night at the CEFCO located at 605 N. 3rd St. in Temple, according to other officers at the scene.

The officer had been called to a welfare check that began inside the convenience store then moved outside. A cashier told Channel 6 he called police because a man was acting suspicious.

Police ultimately arrested that man, but they did not explain what he was being charged with.

Temple Police Spokesperson Shawana Neely later clarified that the officer was not injured by the suspect but instead had previously felt ill and his condition had deteriorated during the call to the point where he had to be transferred to the emergency room to be cared for.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
