Police in India say a passenger train derailed within the last few hours, killing at least 50 people and injuring more than 100.

LUCKNOW, INDIA - A derailed train in Northern India has killed at least 100 people and injured more than 200.

Police say 14 coaches of a passenger train rolled off the track earlier today.

Inspector Anand Mishra said volunteers and railway police are continuing to pull out trapped passengers in the coaches that fell to the side of the track.

The accident occurred right around 3 a.m. near Purwa, which is a village near the industrial city of Kanpur.

Daljeet Chaudhary, a director general of police at the site said medical teams are currently providing first aid near the site while the more seriously injured are being moved to hospitals in Kanpur.

It is not clear yet what caused the coaches to derail.

Train accidents are common in India. Most accidents occur due to human error or aging equipment.

Trains are also one of the more popular modes of transportation in India. Around 23 million passengers use the country's vast railway network every day.
