Kiss likely caused death of newborn who contracted deadly form of meningitis

IOWA CITY, Iowa - An Iowa family is mourning the loss of their infant who died after coming in contact with someone with a cold sore.

Baby Mariana Reese Sifrit passed away 10 days after being hospitalized, NBC affiliate 13WHOTV reported.

She was just 18-days-old.

Doctors told the parents that the infant contracted Meningitis HSV1. They said it is likely someone with a cold sore touched Mariana who then touched her mouth, spreading the virus.

“Mariana’s mother Nicole Sifrit told 13WHOTV to keep your babies isolated and don't let just anyone visit them.

"Make sure they are constantly washing their hands," Sifrit told 13WHOTV. "Don't let people kiss your baby and make sure they ask before they pick up your baby."

The family has a GoFundMe set up for unexpected medical expenses. Click here: https://www.gofundme.com/53bkun-help-baby-mariana
