Basketball sized concrete pieces fall off overpass after fiery I-35 wreck

Jasmin Caldwell reports.

The overpass at Valley Mills Drive and La Salle Avenue will re-open at 6 a.m. Thursday, after Texas Department of Transportation crews complete repairs following Tuesday's fiery tractor trailer crash that killed three people and damaged the bridge.

Basketball sized concrete pieces fell off the overpass onto the highway Tuesday and Wednesday.

TxDOT closed the I-35 inner fast lanes underneath the overpass Wednesday to make room for a bucket truck, as crews examined whether or not the vibrations from passing vehicles would cause the steel on the bridge to come loose.

"Those kind of significant impacts with high intensity heat, we have to look closely to see if there's any damage done that you may not be able to see with a cursory inspection," TxDOT Spokesperson Ken Roberts said.

Waco Police said it would take their reconstruction team time to determine who was at fault in the original crash.

"There's no time limit on when they get done and through with their interviews," Sgt. Swanton said.
