WACO - Waco's new baseball team will be known as the "BlueCats." The name received the most votes from more than 1,800 submissions.
They will play in the Southwest League of Professional Baseball
The winning name came from Steve Fischer, who won season tickets for life.
“I am just so thrilled that Wacoans thought the name would be a great representation of the Waco market," said Fischer.
The Blue Cat is the largest species of North American Catfish and is common in the Brazos River.
“We love the name and the logo”, said Mark Schuster, SWL President. “The chosen name met all three criteria for selection including the name having some tie to the Waco market, the nickname being unique to professional baseball team names and it’s a name that kids will embrace.”
"We're thrilled to have the community so engaged in the process of choosing the name after a 60-year absence of professional baseball”, said Stan Hough, BlueCats Field Manager.
In October, team officials narrowed down the list to just five names from more than 700 submitted. Those names were Woolies, Mammoths, Peppers, Grackles and BlueCats.
The new Waco team will play in The Ballpark at Bellmead, a new $11 million stadium located just off Interstate 35 near Loop 340 in Bellmead. The stadium will have a seating capacity of 4,000.
The team will play a 112 game schedule with 56 home games and 56 games on the road.
Fans can buy official BlueCat hats at the team's website beginning December 2nd at 9 a.m.
