For the second time in less than a year, crowds packed Community Bible Church to say final farewells to a fallen San Antonio police officer.

Officers from around the country made their way to San Antonio to pay their respects to Officer Miguel Moreno, who was killed in a shootout near San Antonio College on June 29.

"Today, my family misses him deeply," said Arturo Moreno, who remembers Miguel Moreno not as an officer, but as his big brother. "He had a passion for fishing, loved to travel, enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He was a compassionate and caring individual to all his family. He was a loving son, brother, and awesome uncle to his nieces and nephews."

Colleagues and dignitaries, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott, offered words of condolences and support to the Moreno family.

Officer Julio Cavazos, Moreno's partner who was also shot on June 29, was recognized with a standing ovation.

Citing scripture, Governor Abbott said, "Greater love has no man than this, to lay down ones life for another. Blessed are the peacekeepers for they will be called children of God. Officer Moreno laid down his life for others, he was a peacekeeper and I believe he is forever a child of God."

"I will never forget my brother. The city will never forget his beautiful smile that was unforgettable. Thank you Miguel, because you were the most important person in my life," Moreno said.

Following the funeral, the Moreno family and members of the San Antonio Police Department attended a private burial ceremony.

Detective Benjamin Marconi was the last SAPD officer killed in the line of duty. Marconi died after being shot near Public Safety Headquarters in downtown San Antonio in November 2016.
