Community remembers mother, daughter killed near Waco

Channel 6 news reporter Andrew Moore reports.

HALLSBURG - Valerie Martinez, 24, and her one-year-old daughter Asariah were well loved in the community of Hallsburg. When they were taken from the world in a double murder on Sunday, Nov. 5th, the community was heartbroken.

But they were heartbroken together.

On Sunday, Nov. 12, Valerie's friends held a vigil.

"They meant the world to me." Jessica Krupicka, a friend of Valerie, said. "I don't see how somebody could do something like that and take away such beautiful people... both of them. That baby was just... a tiny baby."

Around a hundred people came out to Tradinghouse Creek Reservoir Sunday. The community filled balloons with helium and wrote messages with permanent maker.

At 5:30, they released all the balloons together.

One friend of Martinez even made two crosses to place near the shore.

"It was awesome! The crosses were perfect. Everything has been perfect," Cassandra Slaby said. "Everyone showed up for showed up for Valerie."

Organizers say McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara and several deputies were also in attendance.
