False emergency text sent to Baylor University and UMHB

WACO - Baylor University was quick to post on Twitter about a fake emergency text message being sent out to students.

Late Wednesday night, a message was sent out telling recipients to "calmly evacuate all buildings" and wait for instructions. The fake message then sent out another message clarifying the emergency was at "University Park".

Our sister station KHOU out of Houston, Texas told Channel 6 news the messages were originally intended only for the Lone Star College-University Park campus. The campus was being evacuated due to a potential gas leak.

It appears the messages also inadvertently went out to students at several schools throughout the country, including University of Houston, Texas Tech University, Sam Houston State University, Baylor University, University of Mary Hardin Baylor, Texas State University, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, University of Oklahoma, University of Mississippi, University of Central Arkansas and more.
