TEMPLE - Roughly a month after a six-vehicle crash on I-35 near Elm Mott claimed the lives of a mother and her 4-year-old daughter, the father spoke publicly for the first time on Thursday.

Cassandra Higginbotham, 29, of Carrollton and her young daughter Brynleigh died back in March, but her husband Daniel and son Kason -- who were also in the SUV -- survived.

On Thursday, Daniel Higginbotham, 31, spoke of the pain and suffering he has endured since the crash. He was surrounded by family photos as he spoke and was confined to a wheelchair. Daniel said faith and the community support have helped him keep moving forward each day.

"The pain and sorrow that we feel has been outweighed by the compassion that the community has shown us," Daniel said. "I want to extend my thanks to all the hospitals and the staff that have been involved in our recovery."

Kason was still recovering at McLane Children's Hospital Thursday night. Daniel continues to be treated at a continuing care hospital in Temple.
