Hundreds attend peace officer memorial in Waco

Hundreds attend officer remembrance service in Waco during National Police Week.

A peace officer memorial was held at Indian Spring Park in Waco Thursday, falling in the middle of National Police Week.

Several Central Texas law enforcement agencies, including Hewitt Police and Lacy Lakeview Police, participated in the event.

Waco Police Chief Ryan Holt said it was important for police officers and their families to know if they lay down their lives for their communities, their sacrifice will always be remembered.

"It's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day activities of what's going on in the police department and the community," Holt said. "And, I think it's important that we pause. And, this week is a good week to do that -- to pay homage to those that were killed in the line of duty, that came before us."

At least a few hundred people attended the memorial, according to estimates. Holt said the large turnout at Thursday's memorial proves the Central Texas community supports and appreciates local law enforcement, respecting the challenges officers face every day.
