Live grenade detonated near Harker Heights

A live military grenade was found in Bell County.

HARKER HEIGHTS - A grenade was detonated by the  Fort Hood Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit 797 Tuesday afternoon south of Harker Heights at Gravel Crossing road and FM 2484 south .

The Bell County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene around 4 p.m. on a report of a military grenade that was located along the river bank.

Officials said after an inspection, they discovered the grenade was live.

The Sheriff’s department immediately evacuated the Corps Park and secured the area from a safe distance to all street traffic.

The Fort Hood EOD Unit 707 inspected the device and determined it was live and unstable MK2 Frag Pineapple style grenade. The unit advised the area was clear and safe to detonate the device.

The grenade was placed in a small hole in the ground and 1lb of C-4 was placed on top of it with a timed detonator cord attached. The grenade was safely destroyed in place.

No injuries or property damage reported.
