Local advocates take a stand against child abuse 'epidemic'

Central Texas Advocates are trying to prevent child abuse, and they say there were nearly 900 cases at McLane Children's Hospital in 2016.

TEMPLE - April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Baylor Scott & White's McLane Children's Medical Center held its second annual Stand Up Against Child Abuse event Friday to raise awareness for the issue in Central Texas.

In Texas, 185 children are victims of child abuse every single day, according to information from the Children's Advocacy Centers of Texas. Locally, McLane Children's Hospital saw nearly 900 child abuse cases in 2016.

"We must, as a community, understand that when a hospital of this nature has 872 child abuse victims in a year, we have an epidemic," said Kelly Hard, executive director of CASA of Bell and Coryell Counties -- an organization that screens, trains and supervises community volunteers to advocate for safe homes for children in the court system.

Local prevention advocates, including representatives from the Bell County District Attorney's Office and the Temple Police Department, attended Friday's event. They wore blue in a sign of support for prevention efforts.
