Local softball team needs help getting to LLWS

Channel 6 news reporter Jasmin Caldwell reports.

WACO - The Waco softball team, Lake Air, made history last week.

Lake Air won the Little League World Series Southwest region tournament title over New Mexico.

The win qualified Lake Air for its first Little League World Series appearance in team history, and they are asking for help getting to the tournament.

The young stars stood outside of a local Lowe's department store Friday and asked for donations to help fund their cross-country trip to Portland, Oregon.

After the team secured its spot in the Little League World Series, they started a GoFundMe account in efforts to fundraise money for travel expenses.

Then, an online glitch put the girls back at square one.

One of the donors contacted GoFundMe for a refund, and the company mistakenly refunded the money for all of the donors. Suddenly, every cent the team raised, was lost -- and they had to start over.

"We kind of panicked at first like normal humans would do when it comes to money and being financially stable, but we are all strong believers and we have a lot of faith in our girls and in our community to help get us back to where we need to be," Lake Air assistant coach Anthony Thibodeaux said.

Lake Air now has three days to make up the deficit.

Lowe's lent a helping hand Friday with a donation of $500, and they challenge other businesses to join in.

"We're issuing a challenge out to all local businesses in central Texas to either match, or beat our donation," Gary Moss, Lowe's store manager, said.

The team leaves for Portland, Oregon on Monday, and will compete in its first game on Wednesday.

Lake Air will be accepting donations Saturday at Lowe's in Waco from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Lolita's Restaurante from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and at the Shoppes at Ferndale Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
