Man dies in Copperas Cove Police custody

The Copperas Cove Police Department and Texas Rangers are investigating the death of a man, who died of an apparent drug overdose while in their custody.

COPPERAS COVE - A man arrested for carrying drugs in Copperas Cove died in custody Sunday night.

Justin Smith-Washington was peacefully apprehended for possession of a controlled substance at 9:09 p.m. in the 900 block of Mary Street in Copperas Cove. At 9:15 p.m., he was put into a police vehicle to be driven to the Copperas Cove Police Department to be processed into jail. But, when he arrived at police headquarters at 9:19 p.m., officers said they discovered he had vomited, was lethargic and was going in-and-out of consciousness, Police Sgt. Lester Nace said.

When officers realized his condition was poor, they called EMS workers, who performed life-saving measures as they transported Justin to Metroplex Hospital in Killeen, police said. Hospital medical employees treated him, but their efforts were unsuccessful and Justin was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived.

"We are in the early stages of this investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available," Sgt. Nace said.

The Copperas Cove Criminal Investigative Division is working with the Texas Rangers to investigate the unexpected death. Justin's body was sent to Dallas for an autopsy.
