Oldest living veteran will be honored in Austin Friday

AUSTIN - The nation's oldest known veteran will be honored at the Austin Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic when it names a healing garden in his name Friday.

Richard Overton, 110, will celebrate his 111th birthday on May 11. The Austin event is just one of several birthday celebrations planned in the next few weeks.

Overton was born in St. Mary's Colony in Bastrop County and served in the Army from 1942-1945, during World War II. He reached the rank of Corporal in the 1887th Engineer Aviation Battalion.

He still puts whiskey in his coffee, smokes cigars and attends church.
